  History

Started in 1978 by a group of 38 inspirational Sowetan doctors and led by business and political stalwart the late Dr Nthato Motlana, Sechaba Medical Solutions (SMS) has a proud and entrenched history in South Africa as the first 100% black-owned medical aid administrator in our country.

Previously known as Sizwe Medical Services, the administrator has entered a new growth area and rebranded the business as Sechaba Medical Solutions in July 2007.In 2009, SMS brought managed care into its fold.

Since its inception, SMS has established itself as one of the best administrators in the country in terms of service, IT systems and empowerment.

Service and healthcare delivery is Sechaba’s number one priority, backed by a highly competent and experienced team of executives, management and staff. Our Senior Management team has many years' experience within the industry and participates within the various industry bodies. Access to this knowledgeable team of senior management and executives sets us apart from our competitors.

Sechaba currently administers Sizwe Medical Fund

Service:

The company focus is very much aligned towards an empowered, well-equipped workforce that is passionate about servicing its clients. To this end, SMS featured prominently in the independent 2006 TWIG survey for customer service in healthcare, in which it came out tops in the low-income sector and third in the traditional sector.

IT system:

From its humble beginnings, Sechaba now sports one of the most highly advanced medical aid administration systems in the country. Its state-of-the-art IT system is highly flexible, dynamic and at the forefront of international healthcare demands and developments, giving funds under its administration the flexibility to adapt to increasing legislative demands.

Empowerment:

Empowerment in all its many facets has been the backbone on which SMS established itself, and remains the pride of Sechaba moving forward. However, it is not only its long-standing black ownership on which it prides itself, but also its gender empowerment, particularly at branch and departmental management and supervisory levels. SMS has been nominated for several empowerment awards in the healthcare sector.
